This test concept comes from a lot of interesting techniques that people are developing that use iFrames. Many people embed maps and videos into their pages to help rank their maps or videos. The first part of this test is to see whether just the presence of an iframe on a page will help or hinder rank. Another popular concept right now is the use of sentiment words such as best. Should you start changing your titles and descriptions and add sentiment words?

Jo, one of our testers is doing a series on iFrames. iFrames are superhot right now. A lot of people are doing a lot of different things with them. What we are talking about, in a very simple sense, an iFrame is basically something that grabs something else then puts it into a webpage. It grabs a function or grabs another page and embeds that, essentially, to the page.
It gets a little more technical than that but that is the most basic sense of what we are talking about. You have page a and page b and there is an iFrame on page a and it is pulling all of page b in there. We are playing with these kinds of things and this is step 1.
For step 1, we are looking at what happens when we put this iFrame in here. What if anything happens? Are these things being counted? Kind of feeling out what Google is doing with the existence of these things. And then, if you are familiar with a lot of iFrame techniques, they fire a lot of backlinks on these things, believe it or not. What about different keywords embedded, stuff like that.
There are tons of stuff that we are going to be playing with but this is the first step to see what happens and what is going on in here.
A very simple iFrame is embedded. Basically we have two sets of pages. We’ve got the iFrame embedded set, meaning, the number 3 page is getting an iFrame, what happens to it? What ended up happening is it actually dropped to the number 4 spot which was pretty interesting. The page receiving the embedded iFrame dropped.
But then we also had a set of pages that’s sending the iFrame. This one was sending the iFrame page and that one moved to number one. What is pretty cool about that is it is pretty possible that page A is sending a backlink to page B just by the existence of the iFrame. Google crawled the iFrame, went over to B and B is now getting the benefit of being embedded in another page which is pretty cool.
There is a lot to debrief in the what and they why. This is turning into more tests for us. Why did this page that got the iFrame, why did it drop? One thought process is, Google is counting all these as words and now, it went from 1000 words to 2000 words but none of them had the keyword in it so its density in terms of the body, caved and it dropped the page. It could also be a time issue and there are some things going on. It could be a page load issue, a code bloat, etc.
