Buying Expired Domains: DA vs TF

We were just talking about PBNs and most people in here has been in the auction block buying expired domains. Carin Handsun in our group did a lot of work on this and what she did was let us have a niche, our niche is our fake keyword, then let us go out and buy some expired domains that look good that you could get for relatively low prices.

The idea was to get a variety of TF and DA and throw them into the mix and see who wins. This test was a labor of love and it took a ton of time and a ton of work. If you ever built a PBN from the expired domains, you know that it is a ton of work. Carin basically emulated what you would actually do when you are putting these sites together.

At the end of the day, what was really interesting was the site with the DA won. The TF on the site was a 1, which was pretty shocking. I believe the site was gamed. It was gamed so that it has really nice DA but as a result, the TrustFlow wasn’t there but none of that seem to matter. It won.

The biggest take away on this test is that I do not think you can really look at one metric. There are people that are more on the DA camp and there are those on the TF camp. I think when you are evaluating sites when you are buying expired domains or when you are just doing competitive research and looking at link strength, generally do not just look at one metric.

Look at the variety of metrics that you have access to and then at that point when you have numbers you are comfortable with, be a professional and look at the actual backlinks that you can see coming in to the sites.

I was actually surprised to see the DA won because I myself lean towards the TF when I am evaluating things. It was a good kind of smack in the face to make sure that my thinking wasn’t too one directional that I get too focused on the TF and that the DA is a valid metric and you could get sites looking at DA and you could also get good sites looking at TF. I think the idea is make sure you are looking at the balance of things and really evaluate what you are doing.
